preschool games for English leaners

I love you.

5 year old Heather Smith
Canterbury, UK

Six months ago, my four year old and my seven year old spent 20 minutes with Shelley using these techniques to learn colours; I was amazed to find that they still remember them all today!

Julie O'Devlin,
Salisbury, UK

Just wanted to let you know that I started using your course last Monday - what a difference it has made to my preparation! Instead of absolutely dreading the preparation, I actually enjoy it now!!! I've just prepared the second lesson for tomorrow morning and am actually looking forward to going there. I feel much more confident now.

Ruth Gerull, Braunschweig, Germany

Thanks and congratulations because I have found the material most helpful and also inspiring.

Alejandra Morales, Mexico

Thanks Shelley.  Your resources are already saving me heaps of time and lessening the anxiety from having such a hectic and mixed teaching schedule. I'm teaching kindy (4 students) , elementary (15 students) and middle school (50 students).

Free Song and Lion Mask!

Hetty and the Lion - Part Four

Welcome back.  This is the fourth in this series of games, a story and activities to teach preschool children English.

Check out all the songs!

If you have missed the first three parts - which are essential - here they are: (If you bought the preschool games you already have this.)

Part 1 - Hetty and the Lion flashcards and games
Part 2 - Hetty and the Lion Story and illustrations
Part 3 - Hetty and the Lion Post-Story activities

Now I am sending you some post-story activities which you can use for revision and for more speaking practise as the children become more confident with the vocabulary and language.

Hetty Song, Lion Mask and More Activities!

1. Music!

As you probably already know children love songs and music.  I created 16 songs to go hand in hand with the first ten stories.  Now a teacher really has everything he or she needs with games, stories AND songs to go with them.

2. Activities to use with the song

There is a 36-page activity book included with the songs (downloadable).  It contains the words to the songs, which match the vocabulary and phrases from the stories.

It also contains activities for each song, adapted to learn and practise the language.  Each song has a description too on how to prepare and act it out for parents as part of a show.

Here are a couple of examples from the section on the Hetty song...

Listen and Clap
Tell the children you are going to play a song about Hetty and the lion and they are to clap every time they hear the word "lion" or "Hetty". Play the song and demonstrate while they watch and copy. Play it again, gradually fading out your own prompts until the children can do it alone. In another lesson you can play this again but having the children clap on the word "would" – which occurs in almost every line.

Repeat the Words Game
Demonstrate this game first with two students. Half of the children stand along one side of the room and half stand along the other. The children are in pairs opposite each other. The teacher says to the first half "Lion, would you like some apples?" These children run across to their other half opposite and repeat this; "Lion, would you like some apples?" and then run back to their original place.

The teacher now says to the other half, "Oh yes Hetty, oh yes I would". These children now run across to their partner, repeat the line and run back to their original spot. Although this is challenging for three year olds, it is feasible if you have been teaching them for a term or two. It is far too ambitious for an early lesson.

Acting out the song
Divide the class into Hettys and lions. Use real fruits as props if possible. The Hettys advance across the room to the lions offering first an apple and then a pear. The lion takes them and scoffs them greedily! If you play the "Repeat the Words" game described just above you should be able to use the karaoke version and have the children do the words. All the Hettys sing their words together, followed by the lions. The girls will have to be Hetty, while girls and boys can be lions.

More games
Listen Up, Q and A Game, Chase round the Circle game, London Bridge game are also in the Hetty section of the activity book.

In all there are 26 activities ideal for using with songs, whether it's to focus on the vocabulary, practise specific phrases, use the music as backing to another language game, sing along to, or act out the events in the song.

3. Free Lion Mask

With the CD of songs (also available as a download), there are 16 animal masks included.

These come in black and white so children can cut them out and colour them in, and also fully coloured, for dressing up, miming and using in shows at the end of term.

Here's a free one - the lion - so you can use it with Hetty.  The animals that feature in the 16 songs are: ant, giraffe, bear, monkey, pony, spider, fly, duck, dog, cat, snake, elephant, fish, bird, fox and lion.
